At present, Iran, particularly the city of Tehran, is facing a severe water crisis. However, there is a notable lack of seriousness regarding crisis management, both from the government and the public. One significant source of water consumption in Iran is the bath. It appears that the frequency of bathroom visits and prolonged stays in the bathroom in Tehran has increased. This research seeks to address the question: What factors lead the citizens of Tehran to take baths and linger in them? To answer this question, in addition to using the historical-interpretive analysis method, a total of 15 in-depth interviews were conducted. The findings indicate that the collapse of urban space—due to factors such as population growth, the expansion of the city, the disintegration of neighborhood systems, and the commercial and physical development of Tehran—has intensified the internal-external duality among citizens, further exacerbated by a lack of belonging to the external environment. Consequently, citizens employ concepts such as pollution and solitude to differentiate between insiders and outsiders. As a result, the bath has become a sanctuary for removing the external and the unfamiliar. The study demonstrates that the inviting and protective qualities of the bathroom are significantly influenced by the rejection of outer space. Furthermore, we highlight how concepts such as de-identification of the city and spatial exclusion contribute to exacerbating the water crisis.
